True Happiness (Psalm 32)

guitar-1194896-638x439

In the darkness of my sin
I confessed, came to the light;
My brittle bones bent beneath
Your hand of holy might

Let the sinner pray to You,
And the rising flood escape;
Judgment’s waters cannot reach
The one who lives by faith

My joy is Your forgiveness
My happiness, Your peace
How glad I am that You don’t count
All my sins against me!

Lord, You are my hiding place
The devil’s arm is too short:
The shouts of Your salvation
Drown out the Accuser’s hurts

The wicked are beset by pains
Their end is ruin and shame
But faithful love surrounds the one
Who trusts alone in Jesus’ name

My joy is Your forgiveness
My happiness, Your peace
How glad I am that You don’t count
All my sins against me!

Forever Joy

Our songs to You are nothing more than echoes
Our shouts of praise You whisper in our ears
You run in joy to us
Your love embraces us
You celebrate through all the endless years

Give thanks to the LORD,
For He is good!
Forever is His love for us!
Give thanks to the LORD,
Rejoice in Him!
Forever is His joy in us!

You promised and You came to dwell among us
You even took the name “Immanuel”
You quiet us with Your love
Always prove to be enough
Your mercy is worth more than we can tell!

Give thanks to the LORD,
For He is good!
Forever is His love for us!
Give thanks to the LORD,
Rejoice in Him!
Forever is His joy in us!

Zephaniah’s Song

The coming Day is fearful:
A dreadful Day of darkness,
A Day of death and destruction,
A Day of trouble and distress.

Seek the LORD, you humble ones;
Turn to Him from your disgrace.
Turn away from evil in you;
Seek righteousness, a hiding place.

Sing for joy! Shout for gladness!
Clap your hands and dance today!
Rejoice with all your heart and soul:
Your Savior takes your sins away!

He makes low the nations’ pride
He stops all their injustice
He purifies even His own
He justifies His righteousness

Sing for joy! Shout for gladness!
Clap your hands and dance today!
Rejoice with all your heart and soul:
Your Savior takes your sins away!

Jesus is a Mighty Warrior
His joyful songs are our peace
Forever we are His delight
His love will bring us quiet rest

Joy Unspeakable and Full of Glory

A relationship with Jesus is not a solemn, boring affair. It is a celebration, a spiritual banquet of joy and blessing! Of course we should be holy, but we must not be somber. We should be moral but not legalistic and righteous but not stern. Why? Because there is joy in Jesus! Christian, do not mourn when it is time to celebrate.

— Daniel Akin,¬†Exalting Jesus in Mark, 55.

Odd Couple

A common theme encountered in the Psalms is that of the confidence of God’s people and the terror of His enemies (either real or expected).

Psalm 114 is an interesting variation on this theme: the redeemed are the ones terrified.

The Psalm seems to be arranged in three sections:

I. Salvation from Egypt to Canaan (1-2)

II. Creation’s Terror (3-6)

III. Commanded Trembling

Remedy and Replacement

If Psalm 95 had a soundtrack, the record skips and scratches or the car brakes slam between the middle and end of verse 7.

The first verses fit well within the surrounding psalms; the themes of singing, shouting, joy, and the greatness of God are all there. But beginning with the last line of verse 7, the song changes quick, fast, and in a hurry.

Last Call

It is not the dead who praise Yahweh,
nor any of those descending into the silence of death.
But we will praise Yahweh,
both now and forever.
Hallelujah!

Psalm 115:17-18 HCSB

These two verses teach so much about eternal life in such a small space, it’s mind-boggling. (Admittedly, the standard required to boggle my mind is not very high, but still. It’s a worshipful mind-boggling in any case.) Continue reading “Last Call”
